Arlington Library

This project focuses on revitalizing an existing library, with a particular emphasis on establishing a Banned Book Space. My proposed layout for this area is informed by community research, revealing significant high school dropout rates and highlighting a pressing social issue within the town. In response, I aim to create additional quiet study areas for students to engage in their studies or homework more effectively. To accommodate the banned books space, I explored the possibility of utilizing an additional floor, namely the third floor. This involved opening up the existing skylight and installing a grand staircase to seamlessly connect the two levels. Drawing inspiration from the Qtar National Library, which drew people towards its center, I envisioned the third floor as a hub for various library programs.

In consideration of accessibility for individuals with disabilities, I integrated ramps into the design, combining them with bookcases to serve as staircases and opting for ramps instead of steps. Additionally, to maintain a conducive reading environment and minimize distractions, I opted for a neutral tone in the materials used throughout this space.

When shaping the third-floor layout, my focus was on simplifying complexity. This involved stripping away unnecessary embellishments and transforming the building plan into a clean, rectangular shape. I believe that a minimalist and uncluttered environment fosters enhanced focus and immersion in reading.
